UVNA Monthly Meeting: Notes From March 17th, 2011

We met on Thursday night, March 17th, 2011 , at 6:30pm at the Hoyne Avenue Wesleyan Church in Ukrainian Village.   Discussions and announcements were as follows.

  • Reviewed the two petitions that we are circulating through the ward (both petitions can be found on our website where you can sign them)
    • 32nd Ward Recycling Initiative
    • Hoyne & Chicago Stoplight Installation Date Request
    • A request was made that we should follow up with the new Chicago mayor this spring regarding the lack of blue bins in our neighborhood
    • A review of the events starting in 2009 surrounding the intersection of Hoyne & Chicago, the multiple studies done by CDOT regarding the safety of the intersection and the need for a light,  the promise of a light installed being installed in 2010, and the concern that the funds for the installation will not be in the 2011 budget for the 32nd ward.
  • CAPS Meeting Update

    • We will provide notes from future 13th district CAPS meetings on the UVNA website
    • The 13th district meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at St. Helen’s Church.  Dates and times can also be found on the UVNA website events calendar.
    • They discussed the stoplight issue as well
    • Discussed two armed robberies in the are, one at the BP station on Augusta & Western, one in the 2200 block of West Walton
    • We are considered one of the safest neighborhoods in the city, but there is a concern that if the police budget is cut, we may lose patrol cars to other ‘less safe’ neighborhoods. Please be sure to make your voice heard to our are commander, to CAPS, etc, that we do not want this to happen.
    • There continue to be a number of thefts from parked cars in the neighborhood – please remember that its best never to leave anything visible in your car.
    • Remember to lock up your bikes as spring means an increase in bike thefts – be sure to register your bike online with the CPD – using the clearpath system.
    • The 13th District will host a free Food Distribution to West Town Families on March 24th 2011, from 9:30am-10:30am at Eckhart Park, 1330 W. Chicago Avenue.
  • Introduction of our new Interim Secretary – Samantha Arnold & new online presence for the UVNA
    • Samantha has updated the UVNA website and will be adding articles and asking for articles and information from anyone in the neighborhood
    • We now have email addresses for all UVNA officers at our own @uvna.org domain.  The general email address is info@uvna.org
    • We now have a UVNA facebook page :  http://www.facebook.com/uvnachicago
    • We now have a UVNA twitter account:  @uvnachicago
  • Our next meeting will be April 14th instead of April 21st due to the Easter holiday week
    • This next meeting will be focused on bike transportation and safety issues in our neighborhood -all are welcome to attend
  • Our May meeting will focus on the UVNA elections
    • If you are interested in running for President, VP, Treasurer or Secretary, you will need to be part of a full slate of officers in order to run
    • Slates will be announced before the meeting
  • Our June meeting will focus on safety issues in our neighborhood
    • We will invite a CAPS member, and/or other city officials
  • We are still discussing the planning of some neighborhood events this year

  • We are trying to work more closely with the enforcement office at the Landmark preservation commission to preserve the historic character of our district.
    • If you see any exterior construction or renovation work on a building in our neighborhood and you think it may lack the proper permits, please contact our president Paul Matwyshyn at president@uvna.org
