Family Health Fest on July 19th

Saturday, July 19, 9 a.m. – noon
Presence Nazareth Family Center

On the lawn on the east side of the building

Just south of Division and Oakley, be sure to take advantage of free health screenings for adults (cholesterol, blood pressure, body measurement index, diabetes, emotional wellness and foot health). Family Health Fest also will feature back-to-school physicals for kids. Also included will be carnival rides, face painting, caricature drawings, Zumba lessons, balloon sculptures and cooking demonstrations.

Permit Assistance Program Night: Tuesday 1/29

ARQUITECTOS – The Society of Hispanic Professional Architects & 1st Ward Alderman Proco Joe Moreno are hosting a Permit Assistance Night for neighborhood residents to meeting with architects on a volunteer basis to answer questions about City of Chicago building and zoning issues.  Whether you’re planning for a second story addition or bringing your building up to code, members of Arquitectos will guide you through the building permit application process, advise on how to correct building violations and answer other questions.

Please sign-up at the ward office by January 28, 2013.

Location:  1st Ward Office – 2058 N. Western Ave.

Appointments will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please bring documentation that would provide for productive review of your project (e.g. plat of survey: images; list of violations, etc.).

Take A Ukrainian Beadworking Class This Saturday

This Saturday you can sign up for one or two workshops to learn Ukrainian bead-working – also known as Gerdan.

WHERE: Ukrainian National Museum, 2249 W. Superior St.

WHEN: Saturday, June 2nd, 10:00am – 12:30pm OR 1:30pm – 4:00pm

COST: $35 per session or $60 for both (cost includes instruction and refreshments – kits with beads and instructions will be sold for an additional fee. You may also bring your own beads)

FREE 5-week Green Carpentry & Weatherization Class!

This FREE training program, funded by the Illinois Dept. of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, is designed for unemployed and underemployed individuals with experience in home improvement, a desire to begin a career in the carpentry trade, and a genuine interest in the rapidly developing specialties of green carpentry and weatherization.


Trainee Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants for this training should ideally live in the Auburn Gresham, Austin, East Garfield Park, Englewood, Humboldt Park, Logan Square, North Lawndale, Roseland, West Englewood, West Garfield Park, or West Town Community Areas.

Training Period:

April 23, 2012 – May 25, 2012 ( 5 weeks of training)

Training  Days & Times:

Monday – Thursday, 9:00am – 1:00pm (including breaks)


On-site workshop and computer lab (contact for info)


Registration Process:

5-step process

1) phone interview (20 minutes)

2) information session (1 hour)

3) reading/math test (2 hours)

4) other diagnostic tests (2 hours)

5) documentation + pre-employment interview (4 hours).
