(photo via cityofchicago.org)

Yes my friends, it’s true. We’re going to get Blue Cart Recycling this Spring! There are two upcoming meetings in our area (dates and times listed below) where all the details will be explain.  In the meantime, here are the basic you need to know:

  • Date: Blue Cart Recycling starts April 2nd, 2012 and will be collected every other week
  • Bins: Blue carts will be delivered to the front of your house beginning March 21st – you will need to move them next to your garbage bins
  • # of Bins: Single family residences will get 1 cart, two and three-flats will get 2 carts, and 4-flats will receive 3 carts.
  • Pickup Days: According to the city’s website, residents with curbside garbage pickup should put out their blue bins on the day of their garbage pickup during their scheduled blue bin week.  Residents with alley garbage pickup, should leave their blue bins out for the entire scheduled blue bin week.  (Since the map currently on their site excludes our area, we can’t say what the pick-up weeks will be for Ukrainian Village.)

Christmas Tree Recycling – Do Not Leave Trees in Alleys!

Please take your tree to one of the many tree recycling locations available around the city instead!

From Saturday, January 7, 2012 through Friday, January 20, 2012, Chicago residents will be able to drop off their used live holiday trees at one of 23 unmanned locations citywide.

Trees will be mulched so that they can be reused as a fragrant mulch/ground cover on City landscaping projects or by residents in their backyard gardens. This will keep trees from being landfilled and allow an environmentally friendly reuse.

A limited amount of mulch will be left at these sites for pick-up by residents beginning on Friday January 13th. Please remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel and accessories before dropping off your tree. These items can damage the woodchipper machinery and will prevent reuse.

Nearby Locations:

  • Humbolt Park Boathouse  – 1369 N. Sacramento
  • Garfield Park – 100 N. Central Park Ave
  • Grant Park – 900 S. Columbus Drive
  • Lincoln Park – Cannon Drive & Fullerton

For more information on all the city locationssee this flyer from the city.

29 physicians at Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center have been included on the inaugural list of U.S. News Top Doctors. These doctors span 16 specialty areas and were selected based on a peer nomination process. The U.S. News Top Doctors list was developed in collaboration with Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., publisher of America’s Top Doctors®  as well as other guides, and was built upon data from Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors™.  The top doctors selections are based on  nominations submitted by other doctors and then reviewed by a physician-led research team. You can see a full list of the physicians on the list who are affiliated with Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center here, and can read a full-description of their peer nomination process in this article.

Alert: Attempted Residential Break-in Yesterday Afternoon

Yesterday one of our neighbors who lives near Damen & Iowa reported an attempted break-in at the building in the middle of the afternoon.

It looked kinda like a truck the scrappers who pick up metal and appliances drive. This truck was parked in front of our building as he was ringing the doorbell and was no longer there after he ran away. The man was a tall, skinny black dude in his late 30′s. He was wearing a White Sox hat, a tan work shirt, and dark work pants.

You can read all the details here on their post on the Ukrainian Village neighborhood page on everyblock.com.

You may recall there were some break-ins in that area about a month ago, and we’ve heard of a number of garages and residences being broken into this summer along Walton, Augusta, Iowa, Leavitt and Rice.   Last week District 13 police issued a crime alert relating to the recent burglaries and the description is similar to the one mentioned yesterday.

District 13 Crime Alert Ukrainian Village – August 9th 2011

If you see anything suspicious please be sure to call 911 to report it,  and don’t forget to attend the CAPS meeting for our area as well.  Ukrainian Village is part of the 13th Chicago Police Distrcit and falls within beat 1312. Beat 1312 meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at St. Helen’s School.   Check out the calendar for the district for other area CAPS meetings.

If you want to follow recent crime statistics for our neighborhood, you can check the crime information page on our website or visit everyblock.com and look for crime statistics for a particular neighborhood or zip code.  They also allow you to subscribe to daily email updates of newly reported crimes in a certain area.
