Alderman Tom Allen of the 38^th Ward introduced a resolution pushing for the expansion for Blue Cart Recycling citywide by September 1^st, stating that recycling collection should be a regular part of City services, like street sweeping and garbage collection (see Chicago Tribune and Huffington Post). But because of the continued budget problems in the City, it is still difficult to say whether or not Blue Cart expansion will happen this year. You can help show the City that we really need recycling in our neighborhood.

There is ONE WEEK LEFT of the Neighborhood Paper Drive! The results of the the two-week Paper Drive will inform the City on resident participation with recycling programs and could help bring recycling to our neighborhood. Support recycling in our neighborhood and raise funds for UVNA in the process!

Help UVNA make some GREEN with your recyclable paper! The 2010 Neighborhood Paper Drive is coming to Ukrainian Village for two weeks starting June 5th. As a community partner with the City of Chicago Department of Environment and Waste Management, UVNA will set up collection site for two weeks in June at the St. Helen’s Church parking lot – 2347 West Augusta - behind Filichia’s Foods and Imports.

The 2010 Neighborhood Paper Drive is part of the City’s 2010 Earth Day programs.All revenue generated from the recyclables will benefit UVNA. In addition, organizations that collect the most paper can win up to $1,000 in cash prizes.  HELP US RAISE FUNDS FOR UVNA!We will be collecting Mixed Paper, which includes the following:

• Newspapers
• Magazines
• Junk Mail
• Greeting Cards and Cardstock
• Glossy paper
• Brochures and Pamphlets
• Shredded Office Paper in clear plastic bags is acceptable

Basically, most paper is acceptable EXCEPT:

• Food soiled paper
• Waxed cardboard or paper (like milk cartons)
• Carbon paper

Keep checking our website for more details or sign up on the right to be included in our mailing list.  SPREAD THE WORD. START SAVING YOUR PAPER. Larry Shure,  from the City of Chicago Landmarks Commission has been invited to answer any questions or concerns about landmark districts, like Ukrainian Village.  We hope to see you there!
